On Christmas 2007, my family took a flight down to Semarang and stayed on the newly-opened Hotel Gumaya, the second five-star hotel in Semarang. Not yet officially launched, the hotel was already making its marks. Grand weddings and exclusive gala dinners were being hosted there almost every night, filling up the hotel rooms with out-of-town guests.
We had a great deal at Rp550,000 per night (including breakfast), which was only valid during their soft-opening month. Can’t complain about that!
Location-wise, this hotel is located on Jl. Gajah Mada … with many food places within walking distance. A short becak or car ride will take you to the main retail district Simpang Lima. Great place to stay if you want to be close enough to the crowd, but don’t want to be inside that crowd 24/7. The only thing about the location is that Gajah Mada can flood during heavy rains … but almost every main street in Semarang floods during heavy rains … so what? At least we can still order room service if we can’t go out😉
The Room *****
I have to applaud them for designing spacious rooms with gigantic bathrooms. Their in-room internet connection is surprisingly fast, the bed super comfy, and the bathroom just …. pleasant!
The Service ****
We find the service satisfying. They have a nice welcome drink bar at the lobby, so guests can sit back and choose a range of drinks from the counter while waiting for the check-in process to finish. The staff are generally helpful and friendly (one cook taught my son how to make waffles), and rather obsessed about keeping their black-marbled lobby floor shiny clean😉
The Food ****
We only tried their buffet breakfast. While not exquisite, they are up to scratch in terms of taste and variety. Although it seems as if the FB staff were overwhelmed with 100% occupancy every single day of that week…. some times the buffet trays were empty and not re-filled until someone inquired to the staff. And a few guests had to help the staff clean up a table so they can sit down🙂
The only thing we found puzzling about this hotel was the fact that this hotel already got a five-star certificate prior to completion of all facilities. For all we know, the International Hotel & Restaurant Association (IHRA, or PHRI in Indonesia), the body responsible for inspecting and issuing star-rating, should only inspect after total completion of the hotel.
But do we really care? No. Our stay was pleasant, and that’s all that matters🙂 And if Gumaya keeps up their level of service and maintain their hotel well, we will definitely go back there.
